UNF Jazz Ensemble I at Midwest
The University of North Florida Jazz Ensemble 1 is the flagship ensemble of the prestigious University of North Florida Jazz Studies Program. Thanks to the visionary leadership of Rich Matteson in 1986, UNF’s JE 1 has enjoyed the reputation of being one of the finest collegiate jazz ensembles worldwide.
Under the direction of J.B. Scott, they were a featured performance during 2025’s Midwest Clinic. The Midwest Clinic began as a small one-day reading session for 120 directors. By 1947, the event expanded to two days, adopted its official name, and moved to the Hotel Sherman in Chicago, where it remained for 25 years. Throughout the mid-20th century, the clinic grew to include orchestras and jazz ensembles, eventually extending to a four-day format.
