The Torrington High School Marching Band, also known as “The Pride of Torrington” from Connecticut, recently returned from Washington, D.C., where they marched in the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade. The parade is the culmination of the two-week long National Cherry Blossom Festival, which celebrates a gift of cherry trees from Japan to the United States in 1912, promoting diplomatic growth and friendship between the two countries. Instrumental director Wayne Splettstoeszer spoke on behalf of the ensemble about their experiences. All year I have been telling the kids “This is an experience that you will remember for the rest of your life.” Marching for 250,000, the kids were awestruck. At the end of the parade kids were overcome with emotion and tears of joy and accomplishment. As a teacher this was a special moment!” “I have worked with MCI since 2006.
