North Florida Women’s Chorale tours the Baltics

“It’s great to be home after an unforgettable concert tour of the Baltics—Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Singing in each country was a privilege, and the warm, enthusiastic audiences made every performance memorable. In each city, we shared a concert with a local women’s choir, followed by dinner together. It was fascinating to learn that these choirs rehearse twice a week, receive government support based on evaluations, and that every child begins music education in first grade.

Each choir was unique. Estonia’s accomplished Kavad singers performed beautifully using only a tuning fork. Latvia’s Daugavas Vanadzes Senior Choir welcomed us with moving poetry, flower crowns, and wonderful hospitality. In Lithuania, the audience sang and clapped along to “Pempel, Pempel”, gave us an enthusiastic standing ovation, and called us back for an encore. “Bring Me a Little Water, Sylvy” was a crowd favorite!

Beyond the concerts, we explored charming old towns, beautiful parks and palaces, celebrated the Latvian Summer Solstice, and enjoyed impromptu singing in stunning churches. What an incredible experience!

And then there was the food! The limoncello spritzers, the local beer, the delicious pink soup, the fresh fruits and vegetables from the markets, and, of course, the incredible chocolate and marzipan—every meal was an adventure.
