Sicily
Melded from Greek, Etruscan and Roman civilizations, Italian (Roman) culture has influenced Western thought, art, music, literature and civilization more than any other.
Shaped by a unique blend of Greek, Arab, Norman, and Roman influences, Sicilian culture has left an indelible mark on Western history, art, and architecture. The island’s vibrant tapestry of civilizations has created a sensory experience unlike any other, with a richness in history, beauty, and artistic expression that rivals the finest in Europe. The creative spirit that once flourished in ancient Syracuse and Palermo continues to thrive, evident in the island’s stunning cathedrals, mosaics, and vibrant festivals.
Sicily’s deep connection to music and performance remains strong. The island has long welcomed musicians from around the world, and American ensembles are no exception. Through the American Celebration of Music in Sicily, choirs, orchestras, and bands have the opportunity to perform in Sicily’s breathtaking venues — from ancient Greek theaters to baroque churches — bringing modern interpretations to an audience steeped in centuries of musical tradition.
A musical journey through Sicily is an immersion into the heart of Mediterranean culture, where every note carries echoes of the past. The island’s musical legacy includes not only its influence on Italy but also on the wider world, with the sounds of Sicilian folk traditions and classical influences resonating across time. Here, the heritage of great musicians and composers is celebrated in a land that has always embraced the power of music to inspire, unify, and tell the stories of its people.
“Thank you to Music Celebrations International for coordinating our tour of Italy. It was the best trip I’ve taken with a student group in my fifteen years of leading tours. Every detail was attended to, from site-seeing tours to meals to transportation to concerts in some of Europe’s most beautiful venues. We were able to sing during mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, perform a concert at St. Ignazio’s on his feast day, sing in a Florentine church designed by Brunelleschi, and perform our finale concert in Vivaldi’s church overlooking the water in Venice. These experiences will stay with me and my students for years to come!
