Join us for the International Children's Choral Festival In Canterbury Cathedral
Steeped in history, the city of Canterbury and its famous Cathedral form the site of the 2005 International Children's Choral Festival. Selected children's choirs are invited to participate in workshops, individual choir performances, and a combined performance in the Cathedral. The International Children's Choral Festival is sponsored by Music Celebrations International, with Dr. Z. Randall Stroope (University of Nebraska - Omaha) and Mr. Ronald Corp (New London Children's Choir) serving as Festival Music Directors.
Its position on the London-to-Dover route meant that Canterbury was an important Roman town even before St. Augustine arrived in 597, sent by the Pope to convert the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity. It soon became the center of the Church of England. With the building of the cathedral (1077 - 1400) and the martyrdom of Thomas à Becket, Canterbury's future as a religious center was assured. Canterbury Cathedral is the spiritual home of the Church of England. It contains some of the country's most exquisite medieval stained glass and also has some well-preserved 12th-century wall paintings. Britain's first great medieval writer, Geoffrey Chaucer, made the cathedral famous in his Canterbury Tales.
In addition to performances and workshops in Canterbury, choirs can choose from itinerary options to perform in other parts of Britain or France. Popular London is part of every itinerary, giving the participants opportunities to enjoy the rich historical, educational and cultural highlights of this great capital.
Children's choirs will be selected and invited based upon recommendation and/or audition tape. Because of limited capacity in the cathedral, the number of voices must be limited to no more than 300.
Accommodation for the festival is in university residential housing close to the cathedral. A full program of scheduled workshops, rehearsals, sightseeing in and around Canterbury, together with performances in the Cathedral, offer unique and stimulating opportunities for all participants.
